Summit Dental Sterilization Area
As a result of the Alberta Infection Prevention and Control Standards, the has developed standards for dental offices in Alberta. We are proud that we have been able to accomplish and provide all Sterilization protocols required by the Alberta Dental Association and College Infection Prevention and Control Standards. These new standards have required time and the rethinking of office procedures in delivering dental treatment.
For the comfort our patients we would like to provide a breakdown of our daily sterilization process.
Here at Summit Dental:

  • All Dental Professionals at Summit Dental follow proper Hand Hygiene protocol. All soaps are anti-microbial, all hand rubs are alcohol based, hands are cleaned before handling all instruments and equipment; hands are dried with disposable towels.
  • Personal Protective Equipment is worn by all staff who potentially may come in contact with infectious materials as well all contact with patients in the clinical area. All Personal Protective Equipment is immediately removed and discarded after use. Safety glasses are cleaned with high-level disinfectant.
  • All waterlines are purged at the beginning of each workday as well as between each patient and at the end of each workday.
  • All suction lines are cleaned at the start of each workday and after each patient with an enzymatic cleaner.
  • All clinical contact surfaces are wiped down with high-level disinfectant which is approved by ADA + C and assigned a Drug Identification Number from Health Canada. Additionally where possible single-use surface covers are used and immediately discarded after use.
  • All reprocessing devices are approved by the Canadian Health Act and Alberta Dental Association and College as well as annually monitored.
  • All sharps and heavily soiled cotton are disposed of immediately after use in approved sharps and bio-hazardous container which is stored in isolated quarters and removed for disposal by a licensed medical waste company.
  • After immediate use, all instruments that are not disposable or sharps are debrided and then placed in an approved ADA + C instrument washer using detergents manufactured to comply with Health Canada Guidelines.
  • Handpieces are placed in closed lubricant device. Accessories and Handpieces are then debrided with long-handed brushes using high-level disinfectant and or enzymatic products.
  • Once the debriding process is complete, all instruments are wrapped/bagged and processed through steam sterilization. All sterilizers are tested daily, monitored, documented and audited with three different biologic monitor tests.
  • Sterile instruments are then documented, dated and immediately placed within their isolated designated areas.
